The cannabis plant is home to over a hundred unique compounds, and you’ve probably already heard of the most common two: CBD and THC. What are CBD and THC?
Both of these compounds are cannabinoids. CBD stands for cannabidiol, and THC is delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol. They naturally occur in the marijuana plant and interact with the human endocannabinoid system or ECS. Receptors in this system are found in our organs, glands, immune cells, connective tissues, and brain. Therefore, as CBD and THC interact with the ECS, you may see changes in the above-mentioned items.
Differences
Even though the two compounds are closely related, they affect distinct receptors in the endocannabinoid system, so there are a few key differences between them. Here’s what you need to know:
- The High. This is the biggest difference between CBD and THC. THC is responsible for the high associated with marijuana use. Feelings of euphoria, amusement, or creativity are common sensations. CBD is unlikely to create the same high in most users. Plus, it probably won’t induce the negative sensations that can come with being high for some users: paranoia, panic, and anxiety.
- In the United States, THC is still a federally banned substance and is listed as a Schedule I drug. Still, several states have legalized its use medically, recreationally, or both. CBD, on the other hand, is federally legal. However, you should always check out the laws of the state in which you reside before purchasing any CBD or THC product.
- CBD and THC are both found in marijuana. However, CBD products in the US are generally derived from hemp, a plant closely related to marijuana but lacking THC. Hemp can be commercially farmed legally, so it is much easier to source CBD from that plant than marijuana.
